An example of a representational challenge for the students (see Fig. 7.4) was to represent in a drawing the phenomenon that the noon day Sun does not go directly overhead during winter from the location of Melbourne (Australia). This challenge followed a class demonstration and discussion using 3D models representing the phenomenon. Each of the representations draws on different and distinct semiotic resources to indicate the height of the sun above the horizon.
